Earlier tonight, the Natan Region voted to ratify 2 new amendments to the Natan Region Constitution. The Amendments, 2 of the 3 up for ratification tonight, passed with clear, strong majorities, despite initial controversy.
The more controversial of the two, The Speaker Amendment, passed with a 4-1 vote in favor, despite some public opposition. "I think this shows that sometimes, the people just don't always agree with their politicians," the founder said, in a phone interview with NRR. The amendment was controversial, despite all-around intial support, even by Representative Ireland, who later came out against the amendment, claiming it is a result of the founder's "hypocrisy", due to his successful attempts to get the Supreme Court to overturn the "Speaker and Special elections" bill, authored by the late Representative Nimphoran, as unconstitutional. The Amendment's purpose, as stated in its text, allows the Vice President to serve as Acting Speaker in the event of a vacancy, and vote in tied congressional votes.
The other bill that passed today, the Court Recusal Amendment, was far less controversial, and enjoyed nearly full support of the populace. The Amendment, which passed with a 5-0 vote, is aimed at both allowing, and in some cases, requiring that judges in the Natan Region recuse themselves if they have a personal connection to a case.
The 3rd amendment up for a vote, which achieved a 3-2 vote in favor, but did not achieve the required 3/4 supermajority required for amending the constitution, did not pass the ratification vote. This amendment, had it passed, would have prohibited the President from serving more than 2 terms in a row, instead prohibiting them from becoming President for a third consecutive term.
